With a home surround sound system, can/do I get regular television in surround sound, or just movies?

OK,...title is a little vague, but I'm not very knowledgeable in the field. I want to get a surround sound system (Sammy model AHT-Z31). I'm curious if I can set that up not only for surround sound while watching movies, but for my hidef T.V.? Again,...if you're knowledgeable in field, please don't bust this noobs chops. Thanks!
